Floodstop Flood Barriers to replace Dikes

Taken from Article in Lapresse.ca on 5.4.18

Hard hit by the floods in 2017, the Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro is testing new mobile dikes to replace sandbags and further limit the damage during the next floods.

Edwin Romero keeps a fond memory of the floods of last year.Foreman for Pierrefonds, it was he who had received the call of the first citizen to see his house invaded by the waters of the Rivière des Prairies. For days, he and his colleagues worked tirelessly to fill, move, and stack sandbags in an attempt to stem the tide. “It was hard for the teams, both physically and mentally,” he recalls.

The mobile dikes tested are composed of plastic structures reminiscent of concrete blocks, which interlock into one another to form a barrier. A team of three employees can erect a complete dike in just one hour. In comparison, a similar barrier would require 300 to 400 bags of sand, which would monopolize twenty people for five to six hours.

“We can not stop the whole river with that, but in strategic places, it will be useful.

– Johanne Palladini, spokesperson for the Borough of Pierrefonds-Roxboro

Barriers are also more stable than bags that can move under the force of water. Another advantage is that mobile dikes can be reused from one year to another, unlike sandbags, which are considered contaminated after use and must be discarded.

Flood Hardening Report Receives an ‘A’ rating

A white paper submitted by the GZA and National Grid USA which details the use of Floodstop as an ideal way to protect at risk electrical substations from flooding was selected as one of the Best Conference Papers submitted to the 2017 Power & Energy Society General Meeting.

Comments by one of the judges (Xcel Energy) said “the paper illustrated great depth of research of knowledge developed on the subject, and clearly and concisely communicated several key aspects in a useful and practical way.”

Floodstop was selected for the flood protection at a number of locations due to a number of advantages. These include:

· Minimal manpower and equipment required for activation during a flood
· Quick and easy removal of the barriers incase substation emergency works are required

Floodstop on US News in San Francisco

san francisco flood

“With heavy rain forecast for Friday, San Francisco officials are taking a new approach to prevent flood damage. Floodstop flood barriers have been put up in a neighbourhood previously overrun with water. The city is concerned about flash floods, and city crews can now install temporary flood barriers. The red and white plastic barriers line businesses and homes along two blocks of Mission District near 17th and Folsolm Streets.

The project aims to protect a low-lying area that often floods in heavy rain when sewers and storm drains overflow. Floodstop barriers can be easily assembled so that the areas can be protected in good time prior to an expected flood risk.”

Since the initial project, Floodstop has been deployed for flood defense protection on many occasions by San Fran public works.
